"When I grow up, I want to be a writer."
I've been writing for so long I don't even remember exactly when I started - my parents have attempts at stories and poems that I wrote in elementary school - but I first said those words when I was thirteen. I had barely started high school and it was time to start thinking about my future, and that was the only path I saw. It was the only one that was even feasible. I wasn't very good at it yet and I didn't know what I was going to do and I knew the odds weren't in my favor--every kid who grows up reading a book a day wants to be a writer when they grow up, after all. But I was determined it was going to happen. I was going to be a writer. But I knew I wasn't going to be published when I was thirteen. So I followed the example of one of the most interesting historical figures I've learned about: Roald Amundsen, the first man to reach the South Pole. When he decided he was going to sail into the treacherous Antarctic, he didn't just jump into it. He spent over five years preparing, assembling the right crew, teaching himself useful skills, and making a careful plan. He had backup plans for that plan and practiced until he was sure he could execute it. And when he finally went on his expedition, he was not only successful, he was more than a month ahead of the next man, and with no casualties. I couldn't be published as a teenager, I knew that. So I started researching, learning, practicing. I found resources and books. I improved, and I grew confident enough to share my work with others. When I went to college, I got a business degree even though I knew in my heart I was going to be a writer, so I could have a stable day job while I chased my dream and use my degree when I pursued it for real. I joined communities, both online and in-person, in school and bookstores and social media, and found my people. What I wanted to write and how I wanted to reach my goal became clearer, day by day. And now I'm here! I'm submitting my work and finishing projects I could only have dreamed of when I was thirteen and declared what I was going to be. And I'm sharing what I've learned - and am still learning, I'm nowhere near done! - and found with you, so you can get there, too. There's room for all of us on the bookstore shelves, after all. I write primarily fiction novels, a lot of them fantasy or science fiction, but I also write poetry, nonfiction, short stories, and fanfiction. Welcome to the place where I share my progress, my struggles, my successes, my thoughts, and my journey to being an author. I'm so glad you're here!! |
